Do you have to adjust the amount of tide he used in a traditinal washer? -
Hi Jackie - no, you should just be able to dose per the instructions on the back of the bottle. You will notice less suds in the wash, but that is ok - it is the main difference between standard detergent and HE detergent.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Accidentally bought the HE detergent instead of my regular. Can I use the HE detergent in my traditional top loading washer? If so, should I modify the amount?

Inappropriate?is it safe, or wise, to use high efficiency detergent in regular washing machines?

Inappropriate?Ok HE uses less water so the detergent will be less sudsy?Which means less soapy?I want the best for my dollar
I’m frustrated

For any who come after: It's hard for some people to believe, but the amount of suds has absolutely nothing to do with cleaning power. More suds does NOT mean more cleaning power. Chemicals called surfactants are what actually do the cleaning; soap is just one of the many kinds of surfactants used. In very simple terms, surfactants work because one end of the surfactant molecule is attracted to soil while the other end is attracted to water. The surfactant molecules essentially surround the soil (you can imagine each particle of soil kind of like the center of a dandelion puff, with all the molecules of surfactant attached to it and sticking out to form the feathery wisps). The outside of each molecule grabs onto the water in your machine, and when the water drains from your machine it takes the surfactant and the attached soil along with it.
Surfactants naturally make suds, but in the amount necessary to thoroughly clean clothing or other dirty items, many surfactants don't get very sudsy--at least, they don't get nearly as sudsy as old-fashioned soap (which isn't used anymore because it makes soap scum, and nobody likes scummy clothes). When they stopped using soap in their formulas, the manufacturers of regular laundry detergent, knowing that customers believed that suds = clean, actually began adding extra ingredients to detergent solely for the purpose of creating suds. In other words, most of the suds you've always seen when using regular laundry detergent were there strictly to keep you happy by putting on the show you expect to see when you wash clothes.
Because HE washers work differently, these extra sudsing ingredients are left out of HE detergents. But since the sudsing ingredients never added to the cleaning power of the detergent to begin with, leaving them out does NOT mean the product is any less effective.
As for the amount of water in the machine--the little bit of water used by HE machines is all that's needed for the surfactants to carry away the soil. In a regular washing machine, the surfactants still work the same way--they just use a LOT more water than is needed for them to carry away the soil. That's on reason why HE machines really are more Efficient. The extra water that's used in a regular machine is not why HE detergents produce less suds, as I explained above. Similarly, it's also not true that the extra water in a regular machine will dilute HE detergent and keep it from working; as the agitator moves the clothes through the water, the surfactants will still grab onto the soil and remove it when the water is drained.
Ultimately then, "soapiness" or "sudsiness" are really meaningless as far as laundry detergents go. Modern detergents like Tide don't use soap at all, and more suds does NOT mean more clean. -
Inappropriate?i'm releived to hear this!
and for all those confused and frustrated folk, just think of washing dishes in a sink and using a dishwasher. the dishwasher detergent doesn't produce as much suds as the stuff you use in the sink, but it gets your plates just as clean, right?
so tide must have changed the formula so it's easier to rinse out of clothes using less water in high efficiency machines. am i close?
p.s. haven't you ever seen those t.v. shows where they put in too much laundry detergent, and the suds overflow and get everywhere? :)
I’m amused

That is a great way to think about it. I hadn't considered that analogy :) -
Inappropriate?I WISH TIDE WOULD MAKE THE LABEL MORE PROMINENT SO MY HUSBAND WOULD QUIT BUYING THIS HE STUFF!!
-
They have a picture of HE on the label, you right it not big enough to notice., should put it HE logo everywhere on the label and lid. Or color key the bottle for HE. -
Inappropriate?i acciedently bought the HE detergent instead of regular detergent and i want to try and still use it. can i use the HE liquid laundry detergent in my traditional size washing machine? how?

Jessica - see above. You are fine to use HE in your regular machine however you will likely notice less bubbles (suds) than normal. -
Inappropriate? My hubby bought the wrong one too BUT I think it smells WAY better than the regular liquid tide.... so I will continue to buy the HE even though we have a traditional washer
I’m very happy

Inappropriate? You can definitely use HE detergents in a "regular" top loading washer. It is designed to reduce the amount of chemicals that regular high suds detergents produce but there's no reason not to use it in top loaders as well as front loading washing machines. I found this info at http://frontloadingwashersdryers.net/ in case you're interested.

Inappropriate?Tide needs to include on the HE brand box that it is usable in a regular washer. Why wouldn't they have included that information already? It would save the time of people who have the natural inclination to return the soap if they bought it by mistake, or save the time it takes to look it up on the internet or ask wasteful questions to your friends (who also don't know the proper answer)

Inappropriate?Mandy will one day will we be only using HE detergent?
-
Inappropriate?Sooo MY husband isn't the only one who's done this!? I'm thankful for the answers here!
I’m happy!

Soon or in the future it will be only Tide HE that you will see.
