Tide HE scent too strong and unpleasant for my preferences
Help! I usually don't have a problem with detergent fragrances. However, I cannot eliminate a strong, residual scent from my clothes, sheets or towels after using Tide Mountain Breeze HE. I only used this product a couple of times - the bottle is almost full. I washed and re-washed my clothes multi-times with a product free of dyes and fragrance and even vinegar and an extra rinse in my HE washer to attempt to get rid of this problem. It still permeates my clothes in a most offensive way. I'm good with most scents but this is way too much. I even stopped using clothes softener to make sure that wasn't part of the problem.
So now I feel the scent is lingering in my dryer, re-applying the fragrance after the washing is done. I've cleaned the dryer with vinegar, too, but that hasn't worked. What suggestion do you have for de-odorizing my equipment - especially the dryer? I can't afford to buy a new dryer to get rid of this problem. Yuk! It's disgusting and almost making me ill. It's competing with my personal choice of scented bath powders as the fragrance emanates from my chosen outfit for the day.

Inappropriate?Tide Mountain Breeze exudes a too strongly perfumed odor from my clothes and other laundrered items. Even after re-washing with a non-scented laundry detergent and using the extra rinse option, I can't get out the stench of cheap perfume. The odor re-emerges, attaching unpleasantly to the laundry once again after running through the dryer, possibly being regenerated by the heated air used in that appliance. We need a product to clean out the machine to stop the repetitive re-scenting of the clothes after use of the dryer.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? We agree, the smell is over powering and seems to be everwhere now. Worst of all, my wife had reation to the HE Tide laundry soap and has bad skin problems. Are there any ingredients that are in the HE Tide detergent that are not in the regular Tide laundry detergent. We have gotten no answers.
I’m frustrated and upset.
-
Inappropriate? It's not just the HE products either.
Something has changed in ALL of the laundry detergent and fabric softeners.
I have at least $75.00 worth of various products, you name it, Tide, Cheer, Era and Downey at least 3 different scents of each and a few non-scented as well. What a waste of money and space in my laundry room. I've even thought about just giving away the detergent. No matter what combination I use to do my laundry all my clothes come out smelling badly. Even the no-scented ones have a terrible odor. I can hardly stand to wear them after washing. When I put the clothes from the washer to the dryer, my hands smell like chemicals. They stink!
I use such a minimal amount that my clothes are hardly clean anymore. I'm so frustrated.
I love Downey but my old favorites are no good anymore.
Please change it all back. I'm compromising clean for odor free.
I’m extremely unhappy with the products!!

I'm VERY sensitive to fragrances and allergic to many of them. The only detergent & fabric softener (liquid plus sheets) I've ever used are scent free. I can tell you with confidence that the scent you smell after using the fragrance free products is not coming from the fragrance free products. It's left over from the products that have fragrances. -
Well, I use all fragrance-free products, and I know that the fragrance-free Bounce sheets (also made by Proctor & Gamble just like Tide) definitely have a fragrance. I had to get rid of them all. -

Inappropriate?I got a costco size jug of the sibling "Clean Breeze" Tide HE and I find the smell of that just as nauseating as you describe the "Mountain Breeze" to be.
I wrote to Tide asking how best to dispose of it. As of this date I have heard nothing.
I’m gagging on the obnoxious odor
-
Hi, It's S Ewing here.
I made a mistake on my original complaint. It was "Clean Breeze" and not "Mountain Breeze" I was affected by. I, too, gagged on the odor, my lungs became irritated and I ended up with pneumonia. However, a Tide spokesperson claims no connection between my use of their product and my subsequent medical problems. I appreciate your comment. It's comforting to know I'm not alone in having been affected by their product. -

Inappropriate?I have had some trouble with the Clean Breeze myself. If I use it I have to use either an unscented fab softner or a milder smelling fab softner. If I use the matching clean breeze fab softner with the detergent my eyes water and my nose burns.
However, I can use regular Tide with april fresh downy or with bounce outdoor fresh or linen fresh without a problem. I just happen to be sensitive to that particular scent. I don't blame Tide for it. That is just how my own body reacts to it.
I could see if every single person had a problem with it then it would be Tide's fault, but blaming a person's own body chemistry on a company is just a bit of a stretch. It's like someone who is allergic to peanuts bashing the peanut farmer. -
I disagree. Chemical exposure is not the same as an "allergy." An allergy, by definition, is a reaction to a harmless antigen. In this case, you are being exposed to potentially harmful chemicals, and your body is letting you know it. Unfortunately, these lingering chemicals in your clothes are not only a problem for you, but other people around you are exposed. -
Inappropriate?I totally agree! I just posted something about that today! It makes me very sick within minutes of exposure to someone else who has used Tide. All of its fragrance, not just the mountain scent. My eyes and throat burn, and I get a terrible migraine from it. People have to wash multiple times to get the fragrance out.
I have used a product called "Smells Begone" successfully. (I know it's a hokey name, but it works.) Google Punatic Chemical, if you can't find it. About 1-2 C liquid UNSCENTED (be sure to specify because they have fragrances also), soak the clothing in it, then wash with it. So be sure to buy the large bottle.
I also put clothing that is exposed outside for a few days on a hanger.
Hope this helps! And I hope enough of us can persuade Tide to change their formula. It's a killer and makes me resent ANY Tide products. -
I have exactly the same problem as you do - secondhand exposure to these Tide products on peoples' clothes. It is becoming a disability. When I called in the problem to P&G, they said that this "sort of thing is extremely rare." If that is the case, then why were the first 7 or 8 comments from people on the Tide Febreze product containing at least 5 people complaining. One of the complaints even said "headache." Yes - I resent any of P&G's laundry products at this point, and am ready to start action against them. It is worse on me than secondhand cigarette smoke. I am ready for a ban on their products. Thanks for your comments!! -
You need to report these problems, including migraine, to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety division. Also report all complaints, including medical, to the Proctor and Gamble company. They will send you a medical report to complete. -
Inappropriate?I disagree with Heidi. I have difficulty with a lot of fragrances, but my problem with Tide far surpasses my problem with others. And it's newer (within the last 4-10 months). It seems to coincide with Tide's recent media blitz. So toning down the fragrance does not seem to be too much to ask. We not pressing for "free and clear" in everything, realizing that many people like a bit of extra scent. However, it does not have to be overpowering to be effective.
As the saying goes, another person's freedom ends when their fist hits my nose. And in this case, the fist is Tide. -
I agree about freedoms. Do what you want until it affects my health. Yes - it coincides with the P&G media blitz to the unsuspecting consumer. If you have information about regulation for these products, or how to get P&G to stop putting out these new chemicals, please let me know. -
Inappropriate? We are struggling in our household to undo the damage caused to our clothing and our perfume-sensitivity. Vinegar, baking soda, alternative detergents have been tried over several weeks, but still Tide fragrance remains indelible.
I would like to invite Proctor and Gamble to provide a solution. People are spreading bad news about Tide. Let's have some good news.

Inappropriate?I made a typo in my last reply. It's "Punati", not "Punatic". You might have to look under the "industrial" button, rather than "home" but I get the big jugs of Smells Begone unscented. It's the only thing I've found that works. I also spray it in the air or lightly on stuff, and have washed walls, floors, etc. with it to eliminate any residual problems.

Inappropriate?I have a problem with Tide's HE detergent that states it to have the "Original scent". However, it doesn't, at least not the original detergent. I used to like the original scent but this one is so bad I can't sleep in nightgowns washed with this product.
-
I couldn't sleep in the sheets washed in the Tide Clean Breeze HE detergent, either -

been there, done that. They neither provided a solution nor offered responsibility for the hospitalization and health problems which I believe I developed after using this overly strong scented detergent. -
Inappropriate?All,
Have you tried Tide Free & Gentle HE? It is free of dyes and perfumes so may be a great alternative if the scent of Tide HE isn't appealing to you.
You can learn more about this product here: http://www.tide.com/en-US/product/tid...
Hope this helps.
Thanks,

This a great suggestion after-the-fact. I never needed any "Free & Gentle" detergents before, so there was no warning of the affect that "Clean Breeze" would have on me or, apparently, the others who have used it with similar results. -

Inappropriate? It took only a half dozen loads with Tide to completely ruin a brand new $1500 washing machine. I've tried kilograms of baking soda, liters of vinegar and there is nothing I can do to get the smell out. It permeates every piece of clothing I put in the machine. It's making me sick, and I don't want my child exposed to these awful chemicals. Seeing as P&G are not offering any solutions on how to get the smell out of our machines, my only option seems to be to buy a new washing machine.
Someone should start a class action lawsuit over this.
